Senior Director of Global Logistics

Our client, The Rockport Group, is a world leader in the footwear and fashion industry, they produce footwear and operate stores in the United States and 66 other countries around the world. In 2015, The Rockport Company and Boston-based Drydock Footwear came together to form The Rockport Group, a standalone company home to a wide variety of comfort brands, including Rockport, Cobb Hill, Aravon and Dunham.

The Senior Director of Global Logistics will direct, implement, and manage a Global Logistics Strategy for The Rockport Company. The role has additional responsibility of managing the startup of Rockport’s new 3PL Distribution Center in the US. This position will report into The Vice President of Global Operations. 

• Manage multiple Direct Reports including The Logistics Managers for Europe, Korea and Japan, along with the Sr. Manager of Global Distribution Located in Canton, MA. 

• Accountable for developing and implementing an overall global logistics strategy which is aligned to company growth plans and optimizes service and cost while meeting all regulatory requirements. This includes supply chain network analysis, distribution center location assessment, transportation mode and lane determination, distribution and transportation budgeting, third-party partner selection such as 3PL distribution providers, origin management providers, customs brokers, inbound and outbound carriers.

• Responsible for orchestrating all activities related to ensuring the consistent flow of goods and information from suppliers to end customers. This includes optimizing service and cost through transportation management from origin to the distribution center, accurate and timely customs clearance, third-party distribution operations, outbound logistics, export procedures, and returns processing.

• Collaborate with key internal functions such as Customer Operations, Sourcing, Inventory Management and Finance to provide excellence in supply chain visibility, responsiveness, cost effectiveness and on-time-in-full delivery to customers. Develop and leverage differentiated supply chain options to meet performance objectives and overcome constraints.

• Responsible for leading Logistics transformation and continuous improvement projects which may include set-up of 3PL distribution centers, warehouse transitions and inventory moves, set-up and transition of 3PL origin management services, new systems implementations or enhancements impacting the Logistics area, process and policy changes, developing new tools and techniques.

• Negotiate all contracts with external logistics providers including the establishment of standard operating procedures, service level agreements as well as ensuring a thorough legal review.

• Accountable for recruiting, coaching, training, developing and leading a highly capable and effective Global Logistics Team. Transition responsibilities from prior parent companies to a new fully independent but integrated group consisting of Customs and Compliance, Inbound Logistics, Distribution and Outbound Logistics. 

• Direct the Inbound Logistics Team which includes the annual vendor selection and negotiation of competitive contracts for ocean and air freight providers, selecting and managing the origin management provider, provider/carrier set-up and systems connections, developing and monitoring compliance with transportation booking procedures/routing guide instructions, responsible for closely supervising goods in-transit through all modes and nodes and providing complete visibility to relevant stakeholders, expediting supply as needed to meet customer requirements or revenue objectives, managing direct-shipments to customers, auditing freight bills, monitoring supply chain KPI’s and provider/carrier scorecards, troubleshooting transportation and vendor compliance issues,

• Accountable for leading the Customs and Compliance Team which includes overseeing customs broker selection and set-up, C-TPAT administration and compliance, adherence to customs and trade compliance requirements, accurate and timely customs entry and clearance, closely monitoring import activity and liaising with customs brokers, troubleshooting customs and compliance issues, harmonized tariff classification and duty engineering, creating export documentation and ensuring compliance will all regulations, filing claims for duty drawback, interaction with government agencies and external experts, preparing for and managing customs audits/focus assessments, conducting post-entry audits and processing amendments, ensuring all duty assists are accounted for and disclosed, managing import and export recordkeeping, the development, maintenance and training for all policies, procedures and guidelines. 

• Accountable for the over sight of the Distribution and Outbound Logistics Team which includes selecting and negotiating contracts with 3PL warehousing and outbound freight providers (parcel, LTL, TL), developing standard operating procedures and service level agreements with providers, managing the relationship and monitoring the performance of providers, ensuring adherence to customer routing and compliance manuals, working with the providers to research claims and discrepancies, working with the 3PL warehouse provider on capacity planning and management, ensuring inventory accuracy and prompt resolution to issues.

• Acting as the expert, providing global leadership with regard to all aspects of Logistics including strategy, network design, infrastructure, providers, carriers, technology, process, and policies. Offer expertise, guidance and support to all domestic and international markets and distribution channels in areas such as warehousing, inbound and outbound logistics, customs and compliance.

• Develop and monitor a comprehensive suite of Service Level Agreements, Key Performance Indicators, scorecards, metrics, business rules, standard operating procedures, targets and objectives for all providers and carriers. Leverage these tools to take corrective action, drive process and cost improvement, maintain accountability for service standards, and provide visibility to stakeholders. 

• Responsible for building and cultivating cross-functional relationships with key functions such as Customer Operations, Inventory Management, Sales Planning, Sourcing, Finance, I/T, Quality. Maintain strong relationships with external parties – providers, carriers, industry experts, including holding regular fact-based performance reviews. Provide regular updates to key stakeholders and management with regard to distribution center capacity constraints, transportation delays or other logistics-related issues. 

• Responsible for continuously assessing and anticipating internal and external risks such as capacity shortages, regulatory changes, and infrastructure, port, or carrier issues. Proactively develop plans to mitigate risk and ensure continuity of service.  

• 10+ years of global logistics experience successfully managing end to end supply chain solutions including distribution/warehousing, inbound and outbound logistics, customs and compliance, carrier and provider contract negotiation.
• 10+ years managing global logistics teams. 
• Experience with selecting, implementing and managing third-party logistics providers for warehousing and distribution, origin management, and customs brokerage.
• Experience leading multiple warehouse transitions and greenfield operations. 
• Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. 
• Thorough knowledge of ERP systems and superior computer skills. 
• Strong business relationships and understanding of IT systems.
• Strong presentation and attention to detail skills are essential.
